This is the part of the website where I will tell you a little about myself...
I completed my undergraduate degree in Molecular Genetics and Molecular Biology (MGB) at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1996.
I then went on to do a PhD at the University of Toronto in the lab of Dr. Ulrich Tepass working on cell polarity in the fly. My work there led to a number of publications: Tanentzapf et al., 2000; Pellika, Tanentzapf, at al., 2002; Tanentzapf & Tepass, 2003; Tepass et al., 2001.
For my post-doctoral work I went to Cambridge, U.K. as a Human Frontiers Science Program Long-Term postdoctoral fellow at the Gurdon Institute in the lab of Dr. Nick Brown. During my post-doctoral work, I studied how the integrin adhesion complex is assembled and regulated. My work led to several publications including: Becam et al., 2005; Tanentzapf et al., 2006; Tanentzapf & Brown, 2006;
I then spent some time in the lab of Dr. Dorothea Godt at the University of Toronto, looking at the development of a stem cell niche in the fly testes. The resulting manuscript is Tanentzapf et al., 2007.
I have been at the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences at the University of British Columbia since January 2008. I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and Full Professor in 2018.
I have been extremely lucky to work with many outstanding trainees and research staff over the years which you can meet in the People section of the webpage. Please check out the Research section to find out my research interests and the Publications section for a complete list of my publications.
Some other non-science related things about me: I am the lucky father of three wonderful daughters: Naomi, Ida and Margot. My wife Alison is a midwife and a partner at westside midwives. When not spending time with my family you'll find me running the trails of pacific spirit regional park.
